October 21, 2006 - Skokie, IL from 10:45am-11:45am
Presentation Title: “A Multi-Disciplinary Approach
to SES Tutoring”
Presenter: Emily Paris, CEO and Erika Burton Ph.D.
Subject: Supplemental Education Services (SES) is a
federally funded tutoring service available to schools through NCLB
legislation. Schools qualify for such services if they fail AYP (Annual
Yearly Progress) three years in a row and qualify for free and reduced
lunch programs. The shape and scope of these programs vary by company.
One such program, Orion’s Mind, focuses on multiple intelligences, differentiated
learning, constructivist thought processes, components of mastery learning,
and meaningful hands on learning experiences to improve student test
scores in math and reading.

Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) 2007 Annual Conference
March 19th, 2007 - Anaheim, CA from 10:30am-12:30pm
Presentation Title: “Educate the Whole Child While
Teaching Benchmarks and Standards”
Presenter: Emily Paris, CEO and Erika Burton Ph.D.
Subject: Raise test scores or educate the whole child?
Or do both! Educating the whole child gets results! When we taught the
whole child, students’ test scores went up, their classroom performance
improved, and their self-confidence skyrocketed. The students who typically
struggle in school improved the most. Learn how to use state standards
as a launching pad for team-based activities that teach math and reading,
as well as critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, leadership, art,
drama, and movement.
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) 2007 Annual Meeting
March 24th, 2007 – Atlanta, GA from 12:00-1:30pm
Presentation Title: “Combining Creativity and Mathematics”
Presenter: Emily Paris, CEO
Subject: Everyone cares more about their ideas than someone else’s ideas. Allowing students to create their own ideas in math class increases their emotional involvement with the subject. By combining art, movement, and storytelling with math, students of all learning styles are able to learn and understand critical concepts. These non-traditional mediums prove to be valuable platforms for teaching teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Attendees will learn how integrating other disciplines into their math lessons actually increase students’ understanding of math.
